Picture of nothing phone 1
Nothing is a pretty new but fast growing company backed up by a lot of powerful tech heads. Their first product on the market is the Nothing Ear 1 earbuds. After being successful with the earbuds, now they are going to launch a new phone, the Nothing Phone 1. It will be released pretty soon but they came up with a different approach where those people who deserve the phone 1 most will be able to get the phone early through invitations and pre-orders. The phone is out for showcasing purposes and after a lot of teasing from NOTHING, we now know some details about the Nothing Phone 1. I am going to do a deep dive in this article into the Nothing Phone 1 to let you know what to expect from it and should you consider this phone or not if you are waiting to make a decision.

Nothing Phone 1 is here to make a change in the smartphone industry. This phone is so crazy that you can use those led strips as ring lights while recording videos.

Inside the Box
By the look of it you can already tell that this phone is going to be very special. The packaging of Nothing Phone 1 will be eco-friendly, which is why I think the box will be small. I am not sure at this early stage about what exactly we're going to get inside the box but I think the unboxing experience will be pretty great. We can expect some paperwork, a type-c cable and probably some additional one or two things with the phone 1 inside the box to offer a unique experience. I am already loving the look and I think this phone is going to make people think about this company known as Nothing.

Design and Build
The design and aesthetics are the main attraction of this phone because it’s nothing like any other phone on the market right now. We’ve seen some crazy powerful gaming phones with some degree of transparency on the back glass but this Nothing Phone 1 takes the transparency onto another level. There are a lot of cool things going on with the design. First of all, it almost looks like an iphone because of similar type curved corners and flat sides. Then the design is very revealing and the white one looks hot and bold. I hope they will release a black transparent version of the same phone which will look subtle, classic and gorgeous to me.

There are some patterns on the back that you can see through the back glass and you may think that there is the wireless charging coil. You are absolutely right but the crazy part is there are LED strips around the coil. Not only just for the coil but also there are strips of different shapes to indicate call, notification, charging status and many more. A lot of things are going on on the back but still the design, patterns, cutouts and everything combined the phone 1 doesn’t look messy at all. Instead, it represents a very clean, polished, refined and futuristic design which is phenomenal. A lot of hard work went into this.

The build is also top notch with its metal frame formed from recycled aluminum. I like the flat iphone like design but this phone is not a copy of iphone. Instead, the Nothing Phone 1 has a very unique and special design that gives it a new identity and differentiating factor. The build is solid, polished and refined enough to give you a reliable smooth experience. So If you think this phone is unique and different, which obviously it is, then the reason behind is gotta be because of its distinctive design and build.

The Display
Between a lot of fundamentals in a smartphone, the display is probably the hardware that makes the phone most appealing to customers. So the display should look modern to attract customers. This is exactly what Nothing Phone 1 is trying to achieve with its big 6.55 inch display that has a pretty thin symmetrical bezel on all sides and corners. The display looks modern enough and the technology behind is OLED, so it will get a lot of people’s attention. On top of this the OLED screen has a refresh rate of 120 hz, which is more than enough for smooth scrolling and navigations. The aspect ratio is 20:9 with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. Nothing Phone 1’s display has 402 ppi count, which is pretty decent I think. So overall, it is possible that the display can provide a flagship-like experience.

Hardware Specs
This phone is not gonna be a flagship killer but it will definitely be a great all-rounder in the midrange segment. The chipset is Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G with 5G which is based on 6 nm fabrication process. It has 1 x 2.50 GHz, 3 x 2.40 GHz and 4 x 1.80 GHz cores which in total making it an octa core CPU. The GPU is Adreno 642L, which is in the midrange category. This phone will come with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage, not sure about SD card support. The main camera is a 50 MP, f/1.8 and the secondary wide angle camera is a 12 MP, f/2.2 sensor. 4K video recording is supported in this device but not sure about the max fps at this early time before release. There is a single 8 MP, f/2.0 selfie camera that can record 1080p video at 30 fps. This is gonna be pretty decent as a midrange phone.

Software Specs
Nothing Phone 1 is running on Android 12 as its core os. On top of Android 12, the phone will have Nothing OS as a skin. I think with some additional tweaks in the nothing os, this phone will have a pretty stock-like A12 user interface. When the OS is light, the user experience becomes smooth, enjoyable and flawless. Android 12 is well optimized at this stage after almost a year of launch. So with all the bells and whistles of Nothing OS, Android 12 in Nothing Phone 1 should provide smooth quick animations and faster app load time. Nothing has promised that they will provide 3 years of Operating System updates and 4 years of security updates.

Features and Battery
This phone has a lot of cool unique features that no other phone has. Especially the back of the phone is quite different from most phones. It supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Crazy thing is, it has LED strips at the back that respond to wired charging, wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, notifications, recordings and so on. The strips are decorated nicely with different patterns that look clean enough and also help to provide a cool aesthetic look. The bottom LED strip works as a progress bar while charging to show you the battery status. So in addition to the crazy features, you can actually customize the functions of the strips using the Glyph Interface, which is built-in with Nothing OS.

Some other features are Wi-Fi 6 support, 5G bands, loudspeaker support, bluetooth 5.3, NFC, usb type-c 2.0, usb OTG support and many more. This phone has a side mounted fingerprint sensor but to me under-display fingerprint sensors look more attractive. So I would love it more if it came with an under-display fingerprint reader. It has 45 watt fast charging support. The battery capacity is 4500 mAh, which is pretty decent for all-day usage.

Conclusion
Clearly the Nothing Phone 1 is targeted towards a different group of people. The enthusiasts will be able to find and actually appreciate the value of a different looking phone like this one. This phone is unique in a good appealing way. There is nothing weird going on here. The price of this phone will be around 500 USD, which is a little bit on the higher side but we will see how it goes. So if you are looking for a smartphone that fits in this category then I think you should wait a little bit longer and see if this phone meets our expectations or not.

This is not a phone with first generation tech like an under-display camera where usually you have to sacrifice quality and take risks. Instead, this phone comes with a new design with modern tech that is in continuous development. New companies try hard to make overall a better phone to increase their user base. So consider this phone as a rising star and check the latest news about this phone.
